Pistachio Maplewood is a party member in Magical Vacation and a character in Uchū no Kishi. 12-years-old, he is a wolks who uses the wood spirit and a student at Will-o'-Wisp Academy. He is invited to enroll in Will-o'-Wisp when Principal Biscotti hears of his unusual powers, but after proving to be the weakest magician in his class, he has been on the verge of dropping out. Determined to improve his abilities, Pistachio attends the Valencia Beach Seaside School, but is taken to the Light Plane during an enigma invasion. He teams up with the protagonist to foil the enigmas' plans and helps solve mysteries around the Light Plane, joined by Kirsche, Arancia, and Ganache.
In Magical Starsign, Pistachio is a professor at Will-o'-Wisp who substitutes for Miss Madeleine after she departs for Puffoon, though he is only mentioned by name. Pistachio's students reference his strict teaching style and unusual way of speaking, but other magic apprentices in the Baklava solar system recognize Pistachio as a legendary magician from Kovomaka.[2]
In Uchū no Kishi, which takes place in an alternate continuity after Magical Vacation, Pistachio and some of his friends are accompanied by junior students Mash Blanc and Sugar Ronsard, tasked with joining Vanilla Nighthawk in her investigation of the "Sheep".
Profile
Pistachio is very worrisome and has an apparent inferiority complex. He constantly puts himself down and openly frets about his grades, but shows concern over the well-being of others and has a strangely old-fashioned side. He is especially known for his cowardly nature and tendency to panic in the face of danger. Despite his meekness, his loyal and charming nature makes him well-liked by his schoolmates. Pistachio is shown to have a contentious friendship with Pêche, and considers Chocolat his reliable shield.[3] In Japanese, he ends most of his sentences with a verbal tic, っぴ ppi, and his dialogue is written in Café au Lait Font when he feels anxious or excited. He also speaks informally, using slang words such as オイラ oira instead of 俺は ore wa (I am).
Pistachio's eyes are navy blue, and his fur is brown and scruffy. Since his green trousers are too big for his legs, he wears them as a hat instead.[4] His baggy robes are of the same color and also have identical stitching on the sleeves' cuffs. Tied around his neck is a red scarf with yellow polka dots, and he wears big green shoes.
Gameplay
Pistachio joins the party before fighting Demice at Mimolette Forest in the Light Plane, starting at level 1 and wood magic level 2. He uses the wood spirit, which is strong against beast, but weak to insect and dark. His magic can cover single-target and square areas, with a chance to lower the enemies' spirit (magic defense).
From levels 1 through 39, the only stat increase he gets upon levelling up, aside from his usual HP and MP increases, is 1 point into agility. Once he reaches level 40, however, his stat allocation bias changes. His HP and MP will consistently increase by 4, and he earns 4 stat points when he levels up, which are randomly assigned to any of his stats (except MP%). This means that by the postgame, Pistachio will have the highest average stats of the party.
Outside of battle, Pistachio can find three gummy frogs when drinking from HP Pots for the first time. Frogs obtained this way do not count towards the report card, thereby not affecting the appearance of dark spirits or the rejection of love spirits. The frogs' colors are also affected by the player's report card grade: S grade is red, A grade is blue, and anything below is green.

Biography
Early life
Pistachio hailed from a small village where all the townsfolk knew his name, as he was famous for his abilities to read unopened envelopes, bend spoons with his mind, and make acorns fall out of thin air. Locals called his magic abilities the work of a god, and word eventually reached Principal Biscotti, who scouted out Pistachio and invited him to enroll in Will-o'-Wisp Academy. The whole village said their good-byes to Pistachio as he and Biscotti left for the academy dormitory, throwing a celebratory party in his name. Freshly enrolled at Will-o'-Wisp, a conceited Pistachio started out as somewhat of a bully, but was quickly humbled when he realized he was the worst magician in his class. Pistachio tried to keep his failure secret from his parents, though they found out right away, and have insisted that he come home to take over the family business ever since.[5]

After Magical Vacation
Pistachio continued to study hard, and after earning a doctorate from Will-o'-Wisp, he wrote several books to propagate magic far beyond the continent. Some time later, he became a professor at Will-o'-Wisp Academy.
Magical Starsign
Following Miss Madeleine's departure for Puffoon, Professor Pistachio taught the students in her place. However, many found he had a strict and unfair teaching style, which landed them in detention. When the protagonist talked to Jonesy, he commented on Pistachio's annoying "ppi" tic, and mentioned how he used to be a cowardly dropout in his schooldays.[6][7] Russell also got in trouble with Pistachio for failing an assignment, complaining that it was unreasonable because he did not provide any sample problems.[8][9]
Pistachio's name was mentioned later on by a boy named Diecast in Chocomilk Caves on Shadra. According to Diecast, Pistachio Maplewood and many others from Kovomaka, the star of sages, were names that anyone who studied magic would recognize.[2]
Uchū no Kishi
In this continuity, Pistachio accompanied Mash Blanc, Sugar Ronsard, Arancia, Cidre, and Souffle to Eldile Plains to reconvene with Vanilla, whose White Hawk Magic Knights were sent to investigate an alien life form dubbed the "Sheep". Before the group arrived, however, Pistachio and Souffle exclaimed they could no longer detect Vanilla. The Sheep attacked once they arrived at the Sheep's crash site, to which Pistachio and the other senior students attempted to fight back. The students' magic seemed to have no effect against the Sheep, who blasted most of the group away. As Sugar feared that her friends were killed in the attack, Souffle summoned Kelrendu.
Trivia
- Donuts are his favorite food.[4]
- In the Japanese version of Magical Starsign, some of Pistachio's students are named after the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed, those being Jack (ジャック), Russell (ラッセル), and Terrier (テリア).
Nomenclature
His name comes from pistachio, drupes encased in hard white seeds.
