- "Many graduates of my academy have gone on to hold important positions in the country. However, that is not my reason for teaching magic. I want to tell you about everything. Everything there is in this world. And in due time, you'll be free to act of your own will."
- ―Biscotti
Biscotti is a character in the Magical Vacation series. He is a legendary magician who founded Will-o'-Wisp Academy on the planet Kovomaka. Rumor says he discovered the secret to immortality, and possesses an element that does not normally exist in the universe.[1]
Profile
Mysterious in many ways, Biscotti is a wise and adamant man with abnormal magic abilities. His motives tend to be at the expense of other people, but believes they help his pupils learn the true meaning of freedom and awaken to incredible powers.
Biscotti is a tall elderly man with silver hair, bushy eyebrows, and a curly moustache and beard. He is bald underneath his hat, which supposedly came to be after overexerting his magic.[2] For clothing, he wears a blue top hat, blue overcoat, and baggy striped trousers. His hands are gloved, and he carries a wooden cane.
Biography
Early life
While Biscotti's past is mostly ambiguous, he has spent much of his life studying magic and the secrets of universe. At some point, he attended Ambergris Preparatory School on Cassia to learn what was taught by the archwizard Craaken.[3] He also ventured to the Dark Plane and accompanied Gyuuhi Ogura through the corridors of Garam Masala, competing to see who could reach the furthest floor. Presumably around this time, Biscotti sealed away MD01-TANI, a magic doll created by the previous manager of Condimen Tower, within Garam Masala after a war had sparked over its ownership.[4]
Around three hundred years before Magical Vacation, Biscotti visited the enigma king Yuveck. He was curious of the ways in which enigmas cast magic, so he fused with Yuveck to strengthen his already extraordinary abilities. With Yuveck's powers, Biscotti brought magic and spirits to the Material Plane. In Kovomaka Kingdom, a country on the planet Kovomaka at the Baklava solar system's frontier, Will-o'-Wisp Academy was founded to promulgate the teaching of magic.[5][6][7] Kelrendu took control of the enigmas while Yuveck's throne was vacant, launching a full-scale attack on the Material Plane. Luckily, Biscotti was able to use Yuveck's powers to overwhelm Kelrendu, who swore to never contact their world ever again. This defeat was so detrimental to Kelrendu's prestige that the weaker enigmas no longer obeyed him, so he planned to continuously die and reincarnate in order to be reborn as their king; then, he could collapse the Material Plane from within.
Twenty years before Magical Vacation, he took in Chocolat Cracks, whom he taught magic to after he was discovered on a hillside where a road was being paved.
Despite winning the battle against the enigmas, Biscotti found that one in five magicians who graduated from Will-o'-Wisp became corrupted by the foundations of society, leaving their hearts vulnerable to enigmas for fusion. Five years later, the enigma-possessed magicians engulfed Kovomaka Kingdom in a war that lasted for three days. Efforts were made to cover up the conflict, with citizens being told that it had started due to magical experiments going awry. In reality, countless saints and swordsmen fell in battle. Once the war ended, peace quickly returned to the kingdom, upon which Biscotti decided to revise Will-o'-Wisp's curriculum. Rather than keeping students safe from the enigmas, he would have groups of them sent to the Valencia Beach Seaside School every summer, where they would inevitably encounter enigmas. Students with strong wills could hone the enigmas' abilities through fusion, while the rest were consumed by their powers; since children's hearts were pure and not yet corrupted by society, Biscotti believed they would still have control over their consciousnesses. These students went on to hold important positions in the kingdom, especially within the royal army, since Biscotti wanted strong magicians to fight on the front lines in the event of another war.
Roughly twelve years later, Vanilla Nighthawk and her class returned from Valencia Beach, in which an enigma attack took place. One had fused with Vanilla, causing her to crave power and her emotions to spiral out of control. She convinced herself that people hated her for possessing the dark spirit's blood, and asked her brother Ganache if she could defeat Biscotti. Afterwards, Ganache demanded that Biscotti and Miss Madeleine explain Vanilla's change in behavior. Biscotti stated that Vanilla had not changed at all, and was instead awakening to her true potential. Ganache stormed off and accused the headmaster of not knowing the value of a life, to which Madeleine wondered if Valencia Beach was really safe for the students. According to Biscotti, magicians had to learn the meanings of darkness and love in order to truly learn magic, and that suppressing Vanilla would only limit her potential. Two years later, Vanilla's mind and body were assimilated by the enigma and she began rampaging throughout Kovomaka Kingdom. Hundreds of royal soldiers were killed while trying to stop Vanilla, including her ex-boyfriend Chardonnay Cheaptrick. Biscotti eventually intervened, using his magic to seal her inside Chiboust Castle where she would be held for the next year.
Around this time, Biscotti sought many talented magicians to enroll in Will-o'-Wisp. He visited Pistachio Maplewood after hearing of his unique abilities; talked to Olive Tearclown in a dream, assuring her that she could overcome her fear of the darkness; and purchased Café au Lait Rustynail from a curiosity shop, thrilled that he was equipped with the lost AI program Ribbit Ribbit Beta. Lastly, he visited the protagonist in their hometown on the kingdom's outskirts. The protagonist had the ability to see spirits, but was shunned by the townsfolk and deemed a fraud. Many spirits encircled Biscotti, and he invited the protagonist to attend Will-o'-Wisp with the promise of meeting even more spirits. On their way there, he explained that he did not just teach magic to help students earn important jobs in the country, but encouraged them to learn all they could about the world to achieve free will.
Magical Vacation
On the day of the Seaside School, Miss Madeleine admitted to Biscotti that she was not confident in taking care of the sixteen students who would be attending. Biscotti, however, told her how the students could not learn his true intentions, and only half of them needed to return to Will-o'-Wisp and prove they could fight in the imminent war. Although Madeleine was horrified by his words, Biscotti reminded her that the kingdom was in danger without qualified magicians on the front lines. He later appeared on the magic bus, where he threatened to expel students who quit the Seaside School midway through. He also wanted this rule to be kept secret from Madeleine, expecting that she would have them return to Will-o'-Wisp if something happened, then left the bus before it departed for Valencia Beach.
Just like he planned, a swarm of enigmas invaded Valencia Beach and warped the students to another plane of existence called the Light Plane. As for Madeleine, she was warped to the Dark Plane to meet with Equillekrew, who had taken Kelrendu's place as the enigmas' ruler. Biscotti also used his powers to send the magic bus, and its driver Balsamico, to the Light Plane so that it could be used by the students. During the students' journey across the Light and Dark Planes, they resolved to take matters into their own hands and prove their potential to Biscotti, realizing that he knew all of this would happen. They eventually met up with Madeleine in the Dark Plane, where they revealed the headmaster's threat of expulsion, should they ever return to the academy early. Madeleine knew that Biscotti had faith in his pupils, even during the incident with Vanilla. The students also explained how they felt his warm presence throughout their adventure, motivating them to chase after Ganache and Candy, who left for the Death Plane to find Kelrendu.
By the time Madeleine and the students reached Ganache in Moginasu Magic Grotto's depths, he prepared to fuse with Kelrendu so that he could be powerful enough to free Vanilla from Chiboust Castle. He figured out Biscotti's plan to assemble powerful enigma-possessed magicians as tools of war, which resulted in children losing their consciousnesses and causing disaster. Unlike those magicians, though, Ganache was confident that he could control Kelrendu and everyone who has become an enigma's vessel. Madeleine proceeded to explain why Will-o'-Wisp was founded, as well as Biscotti's original intentions with the enigmas, until the three day war forced him to change his entire curriculum. Both Madeleine and Candy knew Vanilla could still be saved, and at Ganache's behest, his classmates interrupted his fusion with Kelrendu. Since Ganache partially contacted an enigma through fusion, he had to release all his magic powers for it to be undone. However, he realized that he awakened to a higher state of consciousness, allowing him to bend reality itself to his will. While the classmates challenged Kelrendu in the Hall of Rebirth, Madeleine told Ganache about Biscotti's fusion with Yuveck and how he was able to win against Kelrendu three centuries ago. The students emerged victorious, after which they warped to the magic bus in preparation for the journey home. Before shifting back to the Material Plane, Ganache suddenly projected his soul next to Biscotti in the academy. Biscotti exclaimed that by combining his life with his consciousness, Ganache could travel the universe of his own volition, for he had found the path of freedom.
After Magical Vacation
Several years later, Biscotti was met by Kale, a Will-o'-Wisp graduate who trained under Miss Madeleine. Kale used to work as the right-hand man of Suspiro, the king of the Baklava solar system, in Puffoon's capital Bena Rikashi, but was nearly expelled from his palace due to severe backlash from the public. He studied at Ambergris Prep and happened upon Craaken's Book of the Darned, where he learned that the universe would soon be destroyed and reborn by Shadra, a giant larva who lived on the planet Shadra inside the sun. Believing the people of Baklava were too incompetent to keep the world alive, Kale took control of the Space Police and joined forces with Chard's astro pirates, ordering them to abduct magicians so they could be fed to Shadra and accelerate the death of the universe. In their conversation, Kale told Biscotti about how the sun's gummy atmosphere was slowly being eaten by Shadra.
Magical Starsign
Once Kale's crusade against magicians came to light, Biscotti instructed Miss Madeleine to find him on Puffoon and put an end to his reign of terror. Her students raised concern, especially after her absence lasted three months. Biscotti refused to provide details on the matter, simply hanging his head and saying that it "should have been me." Unbeknownst to everyone, she was taken prisoner by Kale and the Space Police's fighting instructor Biek Fowler. Caving in from stress, Lassi hijacked one of the academy's secret pursuit rockets and her five classmates followed, but were scattered across the Baklava system. Biscotti attempted to stop them, but was too late.
By the very end of the students' journey, Madeleine sacrificed herself in order to save many magicians who were trapped inside Chromagar Cave, led by the Kovomakan sorcerer Carbon. The six classmates were able to defeat Shadra and kindle a light of rebirth, which shone throughout the galaxy. To Biscotti's shock, Madeleine sent her soul to Will-o'-Wisp where he was observing the radiant sun, and she exclaimed that she came to say good-bye. Her physical body passed away in front of her pupils, telling them in spirit how she would see them again in another life. Guided by Brie Pourri, General Knucklestorm, and the reformed Space Police, the students flew back to Kovomaka abord Neumann, landing before Biscotti in the academy's rocket bay.
