Gummy worm are a species and type of item in Magical Vacation and Magical Starsign.

Profile

Gummy worms are magical gummy creatures that contain the souls, or life force, of worms. The belt-like organ on their bodies are vital to their lives, and removing it will kill them. Curiously, they cannot die from dehydration.[1] When gummy worms are approached, they quickly flee into holes that supposedly exist in 3.5 dimensional space.[2] The two types are lemon-flavored yellow worms and cherry-flavored red worms (a mutation of yellow).

Gameplay

In both games, gummy worms can be eaten in and out of battle to restore a character's MP.

Magical Vacation

Gummy worms can be obtained in a number of ways, mainly from shops and enemy drops. To obtain worms in the field, the player has to catch them before they retreat into a worm hole, otherwise a battle will ensue. If the player uses an MP pot while Kirsch is in the party, and they own 20 or less worms, Kirsch will use his special power to retrieve two yellow worms from the pot. Additionally, Olive's special power prevents battles from occurring when walking near or interacting with gummy worm holes, Pêche sometimes finds coins within holes, and Chocolat may find worms under rocks when they are kicked.

Catching gummy worms is necessary for making stone spirits appear, and are also used to befriend insect spirits. However, beauty spirits threaten to leave the party if too many are caught in the field or purchased in shops, meaning the safest ways of obtaining worms are from chests, enemy drops, and the aforementioned special powers. The number of worms caught is visible on the report card. Excessively catching gummy worms also makes them less likely to appear and respawn, since every worm in a certain area has a set lifespan.

Magical Starsign

In Magical Starsign, catching gummy worms has no consequences. If the protagonist has the light starsign, they can use wild magic to make all worms in an area retreat into their holes. Conversely, Sorbet's forces worms out of their holes. If Nogg is in the party, they can pull worms out of holes without starting a battle.

Trivia

  • In the files of Magical Starsign, there are sprites for a blue-colored gummy worm, though it is never seen in the game.
